After a long journey yesterday, we were able to spend a great day with the school children.
The beds were very comfortable and no mosquitoes disturbed us. The day started off with a toast and omelette breakfast, followed by some Bible study time. We then headed over to the Sunday Service, entirely organized and led by the children. We were able to take part by singing a few of our own songs. Giles even made up a sermon on the spot! We were so moved and in awe of the positivity and the pure happiness these children showed, welcoming us to worship with them and expressing their own faith. Most of the service was led by a twelve year old girl called Grace. She was amazing!
After the service, everyone poured out of church and the children flocked around us to play, sing or ask us lots of questions. They particularly liked the “Kindles” and iPads and enjoyed listening to Benjamin and John on the guitar.
Afterwards, we had a lunch comprising vegetable stew and roast potatoes. While Chris and Claire organized the donated clothes into piles for Tuesday’s market, all of us young people went to do crafts with the children. We tried to make loom bands, glued googly eyes onto plates and made water bombs out of paper. We also made paper airplanes and coloured in pictures. John says “It was a new experience. We all really enjoyed it. I don’t know how teachers do it!”
We were then all invited to a join some players in a football match versus the school teachers. Although we (the boys and Madeleine) lost 6-0, it was a fun experience participating in a game with the whole community and everyone enjoyed themselves. Gabriela spent the afternoon having her hair plaited by about ten girls. She was so patient. We then headed home for a healthy dinner of rice and vegetables. We finished our day with further Bible study and prayer, led by Madeleine and all relaxed by playing cards and making friendship bracelets. We have all enjoyed ourselves today and we love it here!
