Uganda Day 1 Saturday 13 July

Today we arrived at the airport at Kigali at 12:10am, where we had to wait for an hour before the plane took off again. We arrived at Entebbe airport at 3am and then took a jeep and a bus that looked like the “Scooby Doo” van to get to the school. We stopped at the equator to take photos, which was pretty amazing. On the way we saw lots of goats and cattle beside the road, huge Marabou storks and rice fields. The roads were very bumpy. We got here about midday and had a lovely lunch including squashed banana, called “matooke”.

The afternoon was incredible – we got a visit of the school and saw all the boarders in class. They all stood up and gave us a very warm greeting. It is obvious that they love having visitors. They have very little equipment and resources, but it looks like they just love to learn. We then visited the Medical Centre. There were no patients today, so we were able to have a good talk with the doctor and midwife. There is a Vocational Centre next door, where the older students can learn to be a hairdresser. There was even a young man who makes flip flops out of old car tyres – they look really cool.

The best part of the day, though, was when all the boarders came to our lodge at 6pm, in the middle of a tropical storm to give us a fantastic choir performance. They were so happy and full of joy – they even managed to get us up to dance with them.

After a vegetarian dinner, we had some Bible study, before we all went to bed. What a crazy long but brilliant first day.
